About Wall Caps and Coping
Wall Caps and Coping Introduction
Definition and PurposeWall Caps and Coping have the same purpose, that is, they are designed to provide a protective top surface for any type of wall-like structure. There are concrete, brick, block and stone caps. However, sometimes they are referred to with separate meanings; this mainly depends on where the information is coming from. Hence, it is of opinion that coping is for the top of a masonry wall, and wall caps are for in between the structure of the wall, where different levels or indents appear. |

These caps and copings, shelter the wall from harsh weather effects, such as rain, snow, sun and ice.
Retaining Wall Caps and Block Wall Caps
Wall caps and coping are usually designed with a sloping edge; this edge can slope in one direction or in both directions. This sloping edge is what enables the water to be channeled away from the wall opening.
The channeling of water is the major function of wall caps and coping. They protect and preserve the actual structure, for example, protect walls from water damage.

Otherwise, they protect those who use the structure, for instance, pool coping can prevent swimmers from injury when entering or exiting the pool because coping material has rounded edges to prevent people from scratching or cutting themselves in case of an accident. |
Flashing and WeepholesThe prime function of flashing for Wall Caps and Coping is to prevent water and moisture entering the wall. Diverting and collecting water is only a secondary function. |

It is necessary to properly anchor Wall Caps and Copings; you may need to penetrate the flashing with the anchor. It is significantly important to seal your penetrators properly. The reason for this is to prevent water or moisture entering through failed flashings.
In order for the flashings to form a dipped edge, you must extend it beyond the face of the wall, so you will have enough to bend or dip it downwards. Flashings can also be in the form of metal copings. If your flashing is not contained within the wall, the exterior flashing will serve the same function as the interior flashing.
Weepholes are still necessary above the flashings; this will convey the water out of the wall, which is collected by the flashings. Weepholes should be spaced apart to a maximum of 24 inches.
