Size and Space

Really consider how big you want your pond to be, and relate it back to how much space or room you have available or have allocated for the pond. The size is very important, if a pond is too small it will not stand the test of time and weather, and if it is too large for the area you have then it will look odd. If it will be a centerpiece then it should be the largest hardscape in your landscape, whereas, if it is just an accent then it can blend in with the size of the rest of your hardscape features.

Shape and Depth

Always consider the shape of the pond and how it will coincide with the rest of your landscape design. The shape of the pond should complement the shapes of other features or the theme of your property. If your landscape has a formal feel to it then the pond should have lines, curves and angles. However, if your design is a little more casual then you may want to have a simple design and stay away from geometric shapes.

The depth of the pond is also very important, for if it is too deep, then the maintenance requirements will be a lot more time consuming. So in general it is said that ponds should be no more than 3 feet deep. Check you local regulations for in some states a pond deeper than 18 feet needs to be fenced off for safety reasons.

Material Selection

Landscape Ponds are commonly made out of PVC, fiberglass, copper, rubber or concrete. Fiberglass has the longest life expectancy at around 50 years. The great thing is that many of these materials can be made to look as natural as you would like. This way you can match up the pond to your walkway pavers.
