Smart Irrigation Month Gains Momentum

After a successful first Smart Irrigation Month, the industry is gearing up for a larger campaign in 2007 to trumpet advances in irrigation efficiency and take the message to the consumer.

“The irrigation industry fully embraced Smart Irrigation Month in 2006,” said Irrigation Association Communications Committee Chair Jeff Carowitz, who spearheaded the effort for industry involvement. “Building on this strong involvement, we are ready to take the initiative even further.”

Activities in 2006 ranged from distribution of smart controllers by water agencies, to placement of the Smart Irrigation Month logo and efficiency tips on websites and print materials. Companies and agencies integrated the Smart Irrigation Month message into outreach activities ranging from on-hold messages to handouts with irrigation tips.

Additional highlights of Smart Irrigation Month included declarations by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and cooperation from the Environmental Protection Agency, a national farm tour with leaders from the Irrigation Association and the USDA, an industry-oriented ad in participating trade publications and the development of separate websites for consumers and the industry.

“Organizations that participated in Smart Irrigation Month found it complemented ongoing outreach efforts,” Carowitz said.

Smart Irrigation Month is July because mid-summer is a peak time for irrigation water usage, but the industry strives year round for optimum irrigation efficiency. Smart Irrigation Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the need to preserve water resources and the role irrigation technology and irrigation best practices play in conserving water, Carowitz said.

Resources on the industry version of the Smart Irrigation Month website include tips for participation for each segment of the irrigation industry, consumer-oriented articles on irrigation efficiency, and a brochure of irrigation tips to customize, print and share with customers.

From now through July new resources will be added to the website, including public service announcements to submit to local media outlets, sample advertisements and circulars, plus proclamation and press release templates for entities interested in declaring Smart Irrigation Month.
