HISTORY OF PAVED HIGHWAYS IN ALASKA...

The Alcan Highway

In 1942, American Army Engineers spent many months roughing out a road from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, to the existing Richardson Highway at Delta Junction. Civilian contractors were then handed over the project which required them to improve the road with paving and re-grouting.

The distance of this road was about 1,520 miles long, so there was a lot of paving work done. The Alcan Highway is constantly being re-paved and having work done it all year round. Such re-grouting and re-paving projects can at times hold up traffic along this highway.

The Denali Highway

The Denali Highway in Paxton has the east most 20 miles paved. However there are parts of the highway that have cracked and split due to the effects of freeze-thaw conditions. The state has put forth a request to have the entire highway paved; this project is on hold until the correct amount of funds available for the completion of the project.

Denali Highway Damage
Once this highway is completely paved, it will result in increased use by the public, for it will be a much more pleasant drive, this will also increase the amount of tourism to the state, through increased your bus traffic.
