ARKINS QUARRY, COLORADO
In 1886 Arkins quarry was developed between Lyons and Fort Collins, Colorado, by the Union Pacific Railroad. The quarry was developed in order for the Union Pacific Railroad to increase its freight business. Large orders were needed so as to get the quarry off to a great start.
One such order came from Kansas City; they wanted all of the Paving stones supplied by the quarry for their program to pave the entire cities streets and curbs. The quarry had many types of products available, such as; paving stones, flagging, curbing and large foundation stones.
| By the 1920s, the use of concrete became the number one choice structural material. The paving stone business suffered greatly, for it was also Asphalt that took a lead in the market. The only natural stone materials that survived in the building products market was flagging and ornamental stone. The Arkins quarry is still in operation today, but to the same degree as it once was. |

COLORADO BRICK PAVERS PRESERVATION FUND...
Main Street in Colorado runs for about 20 miles, through three cities, is one of the longest main streets in the United States. The Colorado State Historical Fund and the people in the communities are very proud of their preservation of traditional streets and sidewalks.
In the city of Trinidad you can found 6 ½ miles of paved brick streets. These brick and mortared pavers go back to the turn of the century, and have been maintained and have held onto their natural beauty.
 |
The brick pavers were laid in the most stunning decorative patterns. Nowadays, the paving of streets and sidewalks in the city of Trinidad is part of the cities cultural make-up. Because these pavers are so many years old, the increase in car traffic has taken its toll on them, so the State Historical Fund set aside some money to allow for a preservation plan. Therefore, repairs on these streets will be carried out regularly, so as to ensure that these historic brick pavers are around for a lot longer. |
