Historic Cobble Pavers in Washington DC...

When you take a walking tour of Old Town Alexandria, Washington DC, you will enjoy and take in the many historical elements and buildings which have been preserved so that generations to come can appreciate the history of such an old town of DC. The buildings have been noted for their original Georgian architecture and have been restored and preserved to maintain their eighteenth century appearance.

You will also notice that there are several streets where driving is banned, the reason for this is that there are some streets that still have original cobblestone pavers. The pavers are authentic eighteenth century cobble, therefore driving is prohibited so as to preserve these historical artifacts. This just goes to show that pavers and paving stones have been used for so long and are still popular pavement materials today.

Washington DC ’s Belgian Blocks

A member of Team Goethe, Frank Wagner, happened to come across some very old paving stones in a construction site in Washington DC. These paving stones are said to date back to the nineteenth century when a man named Cluss work on paving the streets of DC. These pavers are known as Belgian Block’s and now being showed in exhibitions in DC and Heilbronn.

Restoration of The Treasury Building...

The Treasury Building of DC underwent a massive exterior restoration program, which was completed in late 2000. this was the largest scale restoration in ninety years. The main aim of the program was to carefully clean all of the granite, marble and sandstone surfaces and also to repair any damages in order to bring them back to their original appearance.

Wherever needed, paving stones were re-set or re-laid, and cobble stone pavers were also repaired. All statues and features were also cleaned of all corrosion and paint, and metal was re-painted where required.

The National Mall in Washington DC is a large open area in the center of the city that connects the White House and The United States Capital Buildings which feature many monuments to American leaders from the past to the present. Another attraction to this state is the Art Gallery’s that are also popular.
