Paving a Half Mile Each Night in Georgia...
A recent 14.7 mile project took place on Interstate Highway 75 near Macon, Georgia. This highway is a major business route with about 24% of the some 54,000 vehicles it carries everyday being trucks. This project was given to the Ballenger Paving Division and APAC-Southeast Inc. |
|
Every day the workers would remove about one lane of old concrete pavement, then they would pave on average 1,500 feet and then re-open that part of the lane to the public by the next morning. They were working for eight hours a night and having a 1,500 feet or ½ a mile section ready for road use in the morning.
Even though it is said that concrete need 24 hours to reach a psi of 2,500 strength, data found by a contractor showed that a psi of 1,500 was strong enough to take truck without any permanent damage to the pavement.
The contractors would begin work at 8pm every night. They would start off by closing down the two outside lanes of the highway and leaving the inside lane open for commuters. The actual paving would commence at about 10:30 or 11:00 pm, where the concrete was delivered from the mixing plant to the job site. The concrete was poured using a Maxon spreader and the rest of the paving was carried out by a Gomaco 2800 splitform paver. The surface was finished using 16-foot straightedges to correct any imperfections.
 |
The paving would stop at about 4am every morning. The middle lane was re-opened at 6am every morning and the newly paved lane was to re-open at 10am each morning. The contractors had to allow the pavement to dry for a minimum of 4 hours according to The Georgia Department of Transportation’s curing requirements. |
The state of Georgia takes its road maintenance programs very seriously and there is always re-paving projects going on.
Georgia has an Official code that states the importance and the amount of funding allocated to the repair, re-paving, constructing and restoration of the public roads in Georgia that are most in need. This code is the 32-5-21.
