Paving the Indiana Speedway...
Carl Graham Fisher 1874-1939, was an entrepreneur with sight impairment, who became a pioneer in real estate, automotive and auto racing. He was always interested in bicycles and entered into the racing of bicycles and then later on became involved in auto racing. During his time as a racer he had incurred several injuries and decided to get involved and organize the paving of the race tracks and roadways.
| Fisher was an Indiana native and played a large role in many mayor paving projects in Indiana. He helped develop the first paved highway in the east-west of the US, the Lincoln Highway. He also developed and planned the paving of the Dixie Highway, which ran from the mid-west to Florida. Other projects included the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the first car dealership in the USA. |

Due to many problems with the first track laid for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Fisher decided to gather together all the investors and convinced them that it was necessary to pave the track to make it a safer surface. He was successful and the track was paved using over 3.2 million paving bricks.
The first race attracted over 80,000 people, who saw the very first 500 mile race on May 30, 1911, at an admission price of $1. This speedway was responsible for the creation of the now very popular long distance race called the Indianapolis 500. By paving the race track with brick pavers, the speedway in Indiana brought about this historical race that is now renowned worldwide.
In some ways you could say that if it were not for Fisher deciding to pave the race tracks due to so many injuries occurring on the original rocky roads, motor racing would not have such a long history in Indiana. The Brick paved track made it much safer for the drivers and hence made it a better and more enjoyable spectator sport.

| Indiana gets its name from the Indians which are Native Americans. Indiana means the land of the Indians. The capital city of Indiana is Indianapolis. Indiana is widely and most popularly known for its production of limestone throughout the southern and mountain parts of the state. This type of stone was used to rebuild the damaged walls of the September 11 attacks on the pentagon. |

Indiana also has large coal mines throughout portions of the state. There are also petroleum fields throughout the southwest of Indiana.
Most of the south of Indiana is bush land, farms and national parks. There is over 200,000 acres of natural parks which is close by too Bedford. It is known as The Hoosier National Forest. This is a hilly and mountainous region.
The famous river which runs 475 miles long called the Wabash River is featured through the state on the northwestern and south west area. There are 2 main songs that are meant to be themed because of this river they are known as “On the Banks of the Wabash” and the other is “Wabash Cannonball”. There is another famous river that mainly runs through central Indiana which is called The White River.
