Iowa Avenue has been restored to its original appearance and the increased amount of paving, meant that the walkways were widened to accommodate for the large population of Iowa. By widening the walkways the roads were narrowed, which resulted in more room for outdoor cafes and restaurants. This was important for this street connects people to the Capitol and the rest of the great features of the downtown area. |
The wide bands of interlocking concrete pavers were laid in an array of stunning colors to imitate the look of interwoven strands along the pavement. Many different laying patterns were used for the pavers in each section of the pavement, to define them. In order to withstand the various weights of vehicles entering the street, Holland Stone pavers were laid in a Herringbone pattern. This will help the pavement spread the load over the entire surface and hence making it much more durable through the interlocking capabilities.
In other areas like the crosswalks, a variation on the herringbone patterns was applied. This included having an accent in a different color, which differentiates the street from the walkways. There were four main colors used for paving work on Iowa Avenue, which included; brown, red, chamois and pewter.
Overall, the improvements to Iowa Avenue won them the award for Decorative and Durable designs. The use of pavers has improved the use, aesthetic appeal and functioning of Iowa Avenue.
