History of Concrete Paving in Kansas...
While the world was at war, paving crews called Koss, were busy paving dozens of military airfields in Kansas in 1942. The materials that were being used back then were concrete mixed by skip pavers, who rode alongside the forms. The skip-pavers accepted the dry materials and then mixed in the concrete. The paving projects were quite large like the one at the Topeka Army Air Force Base, which is now known as the Forbes Field. |
|
During this time concrete was produced in a plant site that included the aggregate and cement proportion equipment. Then the batch trucks would divide the correct amount of aggregate and cement based on the volume of each truck. The trucks were loaded with one material at a time from overhead bins. So the concrete is mixed in the individual trucks and then taken to the site for paving.
By 1968 Kansas had employed the use of the slipform paving, which was introduced to Kansas by the McPherson County Koss company. This meant that there were very significant advances made in the productivity of the crews who were paving and constructing the pavements. With the centrally mixed concrete and the slipform paving equipment, and the increased amount of concrete in each batch made paving a much quicker project to construct.
Paved Speedways of Kansas...
 |
Many of the speedways of the United States went from poor uneven and dangerous surfaces to smooth and safe roads. Paving the roads of race tracks has changed the auto racing industry significantly. The reason is that before they were being paves, the races were a very dangerous sport to participate in and spectators were not having a good time watching the excessive amount of accidents and injuries occurring. |
So, by paving the tracks, this sport really became a better spectator sport as well as much safer for the drivers themselves. Here are two tracks that have re-paving work completed over the last few years in Kansas:
| Kansas Speedway: In 1996, International Speedway Corporation began exploring the idea of building a track in the Midwest. Bonds were sold in 1998 and construction on the 1.5-mile tri-oval began a year later. Paving on the track begin in September of that year and construction was completed in the spring of 2001. |
|
Lakeside Speedway, Kansas City: A hotbed of racing for more than 40 years and currently hosting the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series, it's one of the few tracks which was paved but is now a slightly banked dirt half-mile.
