The City of Frankfort, Kentucky Design Standards...
| The Board of Architectural Review for the City of Frankfort, Kentucky has developed a set of design guidelines or controls, in order to preserve the older section of Frankfort. The City would like to preserve the characteristic older physical features of the city. These guidelines will prevent any intrusive architecture and stabilize the value of properties in the area. |
|
The other concern is for the expansion of the knowledge of the historical background of Frankfort, so that generations to come can appreciate it also.
Ground Covers
There are set Ground cover materials set for the City of Frankfort, Kentucky. These specify that any surface materials used such as Paving, terraces or ground cover planting, should coincide with the surrounding ground cover in that specified area. The new ground cover material should combine with existing paving materials and the character of the buildings of that site.
 |
For sidewalks and walkways the guidelines encourage the use of the same paving material as that which already exists. This will enhance the look of the surroundings. It is recommended that any type of paving material that does not conform or add to the character of the site, not be used at all.
The City of Frankfort requires that the use of many different types of paving materials and little grass should be avoided. This is particularly so where the surrounding areas have a lot of large grass areas and few paved areas. The guidelines also state that paved sidewalks should not conflict in appearance and character with adjacent walkways. |
Landscaping
The design standards for the City of Frankfort also have a section on Landscaping. This states that whenever possible, any existing walkways and garden ornaments should be preserved and repaired to maintain an historical element. New landscaping projects are recommended; but that they should try and be consistent with the history of the site and that it should compliment the architecture that is surrounds.
