Louisiana University: Landscape and Architectural Design Guidelines....

The Louisiana State University has set out an overall architectural and aesthetic appeal mission statement. The University is always renovating and maintaining the appearance of their campus and facilities. The aim is to have a safe, well maintained, attractive place for the students and visitors to learn in.

In 1994, the Board of Supervisors developed a set of Campus Design Guidelines. Let us now review the Paving and Landscaping guidelines for the grounds of The University of Louisiana.

Paving

All new constructions must have Paving integrated into the specific design. The paving must be installed correctly to ensure durability as well as a consistency so that the paving will enhance and unify the campus grounds and the character of the architecture and landscaping.

Such paving elements include tiled walks, paved driveways and pathways, steps, plazas,drives and ramps. The paving material that has been set out as the preferred material by the Louisiana University are the concrete pavers. It is the recommended material for all walkways, steps, ramps and driveways.

Other special paving materials can also be used to differentiate and identify major entrances, pedestrian walks, service walks, drives, stopping points and bicycle routes. These special paving materials may include; scored concrete, unit pavers or exposed aggregate concrete.

The great thing about using concrete paving stones is that they are aesthetically appealing and they are also very durable and will last a lifetime!

Landscaping

Having a large variety of trees is encourages by the Design Guidelines of the Louisiana University. Due to maintenance issues the board has recommended these species of trees be planted; Black Willow, Cottonwood, Hackberry, Sweet Gum and Chinese Elm. Native plants also seem to do well in the grounds for they do not require as much maintenance and they also hold up in various climates

Courtyards around the campus should be planted so that the plants compliment but not dominate the area. The designer should take into consideration the sunlight and shade of the courtyard before selecting the appropriate plants.

Due to the French Colonial heritage, Louisiana’s culture is very unique. There are two main languages spoken by this states population.1. English 2. French.

In the 17th century Native Americans inhabited Louisiana followed by Europeans in the 18th century, this is when settlement and colonization began. Still in existence today there are a number of native tribes that are still well known to the people in Louisiana.

The surface of the state of Louisiana is divided into two parts. There is the uplands and the coastal swamp regions. The low swamps and coastal regions are along the famous Mississippi River. The coverage is approximately 20,000 square miles. The upper part of Louisiana is hill lands which consist of prairie and woodlands

There are many salt domes found near the coast where the salt is mined. Oil is another product that is found often. These two products have a big impact to the economy in the state of Louisiana.
