Granite Paving Stones of 19th Century Missouri...
| Just outside the Elephant Rocks State Park in Missouri is the oldest commercial granite quarry in the entire state. This granite quarry opened up for business in about 1869 and provided lovely furnished facing stone for some of the Eads Bridge piers across the Mississippi River. The Missouri granite quarry also supplied the St. Louis levee and downtown streets with millions of paving stones between 1880 and 1900. Today the granite is mostly used for monuments and building veneer. |

Before the area became a state park, the granite was of higher quality and where predominately used for building homes and other structures. Any stone that was left over from the buildings were hammered into blocks and then used as paving stones to pave the streets and pavements in town.
These granite paving stones were about the size of a shoe box. At the time these granite paving stones would have sold for around 8 cents each. To put in perspective a block maker would on a daily basis carve about 50 paving blocks, which mean that he would make approximately $4 a day. This was not a bad wage for that era!

Missouri Red is quarried in the southeastern part of Missouri near Graniteville. This is a type of granite that is particularly red in color due to the large quantities of iron in it. Missouri Red is also coarsely crystalline, which indicates that it is formed deep within the Earth, where it had cooled very slowly. It also happens to be one of the oldest rocks in the state that has been exposed.
The colors of Missouri Red are quite unique and make it all that more special. The feldspar crystals are of pink and red, and the quartz is light gray and is quite translucent. There is also black specs throughout Missouri Red as well. |
It is mostly used for foundations and other building materials. It also makes a stunning decorative paving stone, due to its array of beautiful colors. Missouri Red is widely used in the state as a paving stone which is then engraved and placed in commemorative projects. Such projects include war memorials or new buildings and structures. The paving stones can be placed in the pavement as a paving block or they can be incorporated into a wall with the appropriate engravings on them.

During the civil war Missouri was branded as the slave state. The two large rivers that flow through this state are the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers.
Missouri has large quantities of limestone and other minerals that are mined. Lead is also highly produced and most of the mines are in the states central eastern location.
Tourism is an important part of the economy and so is the retail and wholesale trade.
During the economic analysis that was conducted in 2003 it estimated the state of Missouri‘s productivity for the economy was $197 billion. This figure also includes the agricultural products such as eggs, corn, pork, beef and hay that are produced in this state.
