British Memorial Garden, Lower Manhattan, New York ...
On May the 10th a new project began for the construction of the British memorial Garden in Hanover Square in Lower Manhattan, New York. On this day a special groundbreaking ceremony was held and many people participated in the ceremonial breaking of the first piece of ground for the British Memorial Garden. |
|
This memorial garden is dedicated to the 67 British victims who lost their lives in the tragedy that was September 11th. The site includes over an acre of land and was torn apart from the paving stones upwards. Every element of the garden will be made by craftsman so that they can incorporate British materials, from the benches to the lamp posts.
The idea was that the map of Great Britain would be made using cut pacing stones. These paving stones were made from special imported stone called Morayshire stone. The sub-slab for all paved areas is concrete slabs, which are then covered by the Morayshire paving stones.
The Caithness stone will be used for the main paving of the garden walkways. When light strikes this stone, it sends off an interplay of colors. It is also the stone used to pave the Royal Mall in Edinburgh.
 |
The stonemason was to interlock over 240 paving flagstones, which will become the base for the British Memorial Garden. The design required the stonemason to use two different colored paving stones, which had been shipped from the isles of Scotland, and to interweave them so as to create a visualization of the map of the British Isles. |
Many have reported that this Memorial Garden will be one of the most impressive parks in the whole state of New York. The reason for this is because of the level of talent and creative workmanship going into the construction and design of the British memorial Garden. It is truly one of a kind, with paving stones made from stone that has been shipped across sea from Scotland.
This Memorial Garden and its spectacular stone features will be the pride of Manhattan, even though it has come from such a terrible and tragic event. Those British victims of September 11th will be commemorated and always remembered. This garden is a place that family and loved ones can visit and the public can also pay their respects to those who lost their lives.
