University of North Carolina, Repaving the Alumni House ….

The Alumni House on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro is a prized historic possession of the university. A local architect went over the house carefully and has enlisted the services of some of the local contractors to carry out some plumbing, mechanical, electrical and engineering jobs on the historic house.

This renovation project is said to be completed by 2007. The university prides itself on maintaining the historic appeal of such buildings on the campus. Therefore any work that is done must resemble the original design, construction and materials of the Alumni House.

The elevated walkway surrounding the house has deteriorated significantly due to weather and water seeping through the concrete and damaging the reinforced steel beneath. This restoration program will include the removal of the existing flagstone paving and replacing it with a new walkway of very similar flagstone pavers.

To start off the old handrails will be removed as well as the old flagstone pavers and existing waterproofing. Then the contractors will install a new waterproofing membrane, drainage mat, setting bed and then the new flagstone pavers will be laid on top. This will ensure that the same kind of deterioration will not occur in the future. Lastly a new set of handrails will be installed to finish off the walkway and have it looking as close to the original design as possible.

Flagstone pavers are a natural and quite thin type of paving material. Flagstone is however very durable and though the texture is characteristically smooth, these pavers are slip-resistant, making them safe to walk on even when wet. They are available in a lovely array of classical colors and tones and are ideal for creating an "old world"charm to any new or existing site.

North Carolina is also home to the international NASCAR racing. It is well known for their motor sports. Many travel long length of time to sit relax and enjoy the adrenalin rush from watch the NASCAR’s race around the tracks which are found near Charlotte.
