| The city of Nelsonville has a long and impressive history in the industry of brick making. It was renowned for the production of bricks for buildings, sidewalk bricks, paving bricks and sewer tiles. In its day the Hocking Valley near Nelsonville was a major manufacturer of the highest quality, durable brick. |

The bricks were made by men who had been trained by their fathers. Here is a guide through the steps that were taken to produce such imperishable building and paving bricks.
- They used number 5 fire-clay and repressed brick
- This was pugged and mixed properly and efficiently
- Then dried and seasoned in expensive sheds
- Under strict quality control by professional inspectors
- Burned at 2000 degrees in kilns
- Glazed with salt by shoveling salt into the fire at high temperatures
This method of producing bricks for building and paving has been unchanged for over seventy years because it is so effective and the results speak for themselves. Some of the bricks produced in Nelsonville can be seen all over the US, on sidewalks, pavements and buildings. These bricks were also shipped off overseas for use as paving stones and building bricks.

There were many other brick companies operating in the early 1900’s in the state of Ohio. Most of them specialized in the production of paving bricks, the main reason for this is that during this time period is when a lot of the cities were concentrating on getting their street, sidewalks and pavements paved. So the demand was very high for paving stones during this era. |
Some of the companies that produced paving bricks included The Trimble brick Co., The Wassall Brick Co., Hocking Valley Products Co., The Columbus Brick and Terra Cotta Company, and The Haydenville Brick Companies. Each of these companies experienced the paving boom in the early 1900's when every city wanted their streets and sidewalks paved.
