Oregon Puts Permeable Paving at the Top of the List ...
| The state of Oregon has a strong focus on environmental issues and concerns, in particular the issue of the negative relationship between the environment and impervious surfaces. There is an overwhelming amount of evidence to support this issue, but in no way does Oregon think that by putting a stop to paving the streets and pavements of the city or the driveways and walkways in suburbia, that it will be beneficial. |
|
Therefore, Oregon, like many other States have taken to the option of Porous or Permeable Paving. There are nine different families of this porous or permeable pavement. One such method includes open-jointed pavers that can be filled with turf or some kind of aggregate, which will allow water to penetrate to the sub-soil and hence reduce the amount of polluted water runoff. All porous pavements work upon the same principle, where water is permitted to soak through to the sub-base of the pavement rather than becoming part of polluted storm-water runoff.
 |
Some of the other porous paving materials on the market today are wood mulch and crushed shell or stones and traditional decking. Even installing your pavers with sand rather than mortar will allow water to penetrate to the soil beneath the surface. You may also notice that a lot of parking lots and access lanes are being laid with plastic or concrete grid pavers, which have |
openings that are then planted with some kind of vegetation. The grid systems still provides a strong, heavy load-bearing surface, and the vegetation allows water to be filtered through to the base soils.
The rate of growth in the amount of porous paving being conducted in Oregon is ever increasing as each year goes by. The percentage rate is very high and this mainly due to the public concern and requirement for storm water management. Some say that permeable or porous pavements are not suitable for highways and major roads of cities, but that is simply not so. For in Oregon it is now routine for their highways to be resurfaced with a layer of pervious asphalt over the impervious surface below.
There is no doubt that by implementing the use of permeable pavers and paving materials, as well as the design of buildings and their surroundings that these things will help the environmental concerns caused by the increase in the amount of storm water runoff into our streams and rivers. It may not be a complete solution, but at least the state of Oregon has come to the realization that every little bit helps, and that doing something is much better than doing nothing at all.
