Repaving The Boulevards in St .George, Utah ...
| The state of Utah takes all road restoration projects very seriously for there are committees that discuss every aspect of the construction of new roads or the restoration of an existing road. This was particularly so when the St. George Boulevard needed plans set out for the reconstruction of the stretch of roadway from Bluff Street to I-15, in order to gain more efficient traffic flow. when re-paving a section of road or highway that carries people commuting back and forth to work, it is crucial to have every step of the paving project planned and scheduled. |
|
It was very important for this project that the state of Utah tried its best to minimize the effect of this re-paving on the travelers and retailers. The committee also had to discussed the best methods of proceeding with excavation and repaving, construction phases, medians, landscaping and the most efficient type of paving material.
The paving condition of The Boulevard was in tatters, it had deteriorated to a point where there were large pot holes in the paving and deep gutters. The open gutters acted as the irrigation water runoff mechanism, which had caused many a bent wheel or broken axle. Just for vehicles to pull off The Boulevard into their place of work soon became a dangerous mission. Not only was the driver trying to go slowly over the holes and open gutters, but the traffic situation behind them was also a concern.
 |
The committee decided that it was important for drivers to be on a paved surface at all times throughout the repaving project. The reason for this was simply to provide better access and to also reduce the amount of dust and dirt flying through the air.
Thus, it was decided that only one side of the Boulevard will be paved at a time, so that drivers will always be on a paved surface. The lanes would then be alternated as they are completed. |
One of the other adjustments that had to be made, which was a request by the Mayor, was that the contractors modify the paving schedule. It was agreed that the contractor would only apply the last coat once the entire surface was applied with the initial sub-grade paving. The last coat will be applied in one operation from Bluff Street to 1000 East.
At the end of the project, the result will be a stunning new landscape and a dramatic change in scenery for the commuters. All of the travelers will be surprised and realize that all the disruption over the repaving phase was well worth it. The sidewalks will also be re-paved so as to complete the picture, with benches added and also trees lining the sidewalks.
